Sweetest Day began more than 80 years ago, when a Cleveland man, feeling many orphans, elderly and shut-ins too often felt neglected, conceived of the idea of showing them they were remembered. He did this with sweets and other gifts, distributed with the help of friends and neighbors on the third Saturday in October. Over the years, Sweetest Day has become a week long celebration of remembering others with flowers, candies, cards, or a kind word. The focus has shifted toward sweethearts. Still, the underlying purpose of Sweetest Week remains -- to recognize those too often unappreciated with a sweet gesture of love.
