About Valentine's Day: Valentine's Day dates back to at least 496 AD, when Pope Gelasius established the Feast of Saint Valentine on February 14 in honor of Saint Valentine of Rome. By the 17th Century, flowers became an increasingly important part of the worldwide Valentine tradition. Roses were already popular as a symbol of love, romance, and beauty. The cultivation of roses begain thousands of year earlier, and they were especially popular in ancient Egypt and Greek mythology. In one story, Venus (the godess of love) became to jealous of the beautiful mortal Psyche that she instructed her son Cupid (also known as Eros) to make Psyche fall in love with a beast. But, Cupid beame so infatuated with Psyche that he married her himself -- on the one condition that she not gaze on his godly face. Of course, Phyche's curiosity got the better of her, and she stole a glance, causing Cupid to leave her in anger. Afer searching the world for her lover, Psyche was eventually reunited with Cupid and became immortal herself. In other stories, it was Cupid's arrow that gave roses their thorns, and when Venus pricked her foot on a thorn while walking in a garden, the roses turned deep red.
